What used to be basic cooking ingredients is now becoming a struggle for many Nigerian households.

Actress Ruth Kadiri says even feeding a small family is now putting serious pressure on incomes.

Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Ruth Kadiri, has raised concerns over the rising cost of living in Nigeria. In a video shared on her Instagram page on Wednesday, she expressed frustration over how expensive basic food items have become.

Kadiri said she was shocked that as much as ₦5,000 is now spent just on tomatoes and pepper, pointing out how difficult daily survival has become for average Nigerians.

She warned that the rising cost of feeding is no longer just an economic issue but a mental and emotional burden on families. According to her, many households are now forced to spend a large portion of their income on basic food needs, leaving little for other essentials.

The actress expressed concern that continuous hardship could increase anger and frustration in society, affecting relationships and everyday life across homes.

Kadiri said:
“The cost of tomatoes is now so high… somebody will use N5,000 to buy pepper and tomato… while somebody is earning N25,000 to N50,000 monthly.”

She added that the situation is placing heavy emotional pressure on citizens and making everyday living increasingly difficult.

Her comments come amid growing public complaints about food inflation and rising living costs across Nigeria, especially in urban markets where prices of staples continue to fluctuate.

For many Nigerians, the question is no longer “what to eat” — but “how to afford it.”
