Fear and grief grip the Borgu Emirate as more than 40 residents fall victim to recent terrorist attacks in Niger State. Families have abandoned their homes, schools remain closed, and livelihoods are disrupted. Local leaders are now calling on the federal and state governments for urgent security intervention.

The Borgu Emirate, in partnership with Christian and Muslim communities across Borgu and Agwara Local Councils in Niger State, has issued a strong appeal to the Federal Government and Niger State authorities to act swiftly against escalating terrorist activities. Over 40 people have been killed in recent attacks, leaving residents fleeing their homes for safety.

Speaking at a press conference in Suleja, Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State and Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, called for the establishment of a fully equipped military base in Agwara Local Council. He also urged the fortification of police stations, the deployment of additional security personnel, and the creation of strategically positioned checkpoints to safeguard lives and property.

Bishop Yohanna highlighted the urgent need for collaboration between security agencies and local stakeholders to restore peace and stability. “All schools in the area remain closed, social and economic activities have stalled, and people are living in fear. Our children deserve a secure future, and our communities need to resume farming and normal life,” he emphasized.

Representatives of the Borgu Emirate, including Prince Murtala Dantoro and Muslim community leader Muhammad Ibrahim Sani, stressed the devastating impact of the violence on local communities. They appealed to the federal government not in anger, but in hope, calling for a partnership to end the spate of killings and abductions.

The communities acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s initial directives to the Service Chiefs but emphasized that concrete actions are necessary to protect citizens. The ongoing insecurity threatens the very fabric of life in Borgu, affecting education, commerce, and basic daily activities.
