Nigerian-American engineer and Harvard graduate Yinka Ogunbiyi has introduced HaloBraid, described as the world's first patented braid-assist robotic technology designed to support professional hairstylists.
The innovation recently secured $7 million in seed funding, led by venture capital firm Seven Seven Six, founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, with participation from AlleyCorp and Bling Capital. According to reports, the company has also attracted a waiting list of more than 7,000 salons ahead of its commercial rollout.
The idea was born during the COVID-19 pandemic after Ogunbiyi spent several days installing her own protective knotless braids. Working alongside co-founder David Afolabi, she developed a robotic system that performs the repetitive mid-shaft braiding process while leaving the creative and technical aspects—including sectioning, anchoring and finishing—to professional stylists.
Speaking about concerns over automation, Ogunbiyi argued that HaloBraid is designed to complement human expertise rather than replace it, saying technology should reduce repetitive labour while preserving the cultural experience of hairstyling.
HaloBraid represents more than another robotics startup. It reflects a growing shift toward technologies that augment skilled workers instead of attempting to automate entire professions.
Hair braiding has long been recognised as both an art form and a physically demanding occupation. Professional braiders often spend hours performing repetitive hand, wrist and back movements that can lead to long-term strain. If HaloBraid performs as intended, it could reduce those physical demands while allowing stylists to serve more clients within the same working day.

Others remain cautious. Automation in any labour-intensive profession often raises fears about job displacement and the gradual loss of traditional craftsmanship. Some critics question whether introducing robotics into cultural hairstyling could reduce the personal connection that many clients value during salon visits.
Ogunbiyi rejects that interpretation, maintaining that the machine performs only one repetitive stage of the process while leaving creativity, precision and customer interaction firmly in the hands of trained professionals. In that sense, HaloBraid resembles technology already used in healthcare, manufacturing and design—where machines assist specialists rather than replace them.
For Nigeria, the story carries significance beyond technological achievement. It highlights the growing influence of Nigerian innovators in global technology and entrepreneurship, particularly in sectors rooted in African culture.
The success of HaloBraid may encourage greater investment in African founders solving niche but globally relevant problems. It also reinforces the importance of combining engineering, business strategy and cultural understanding when developing products for international markets.
If the technology delivers on its promises, salons could experience shorter appointment times, improved staff wellbeing and increased customer capacity. At the same time, regulators, salon owners and stylists will need to determine how such innovations fit into existing business models without undermining employment opportunities.
