A fake video is spreading online, and Nigeria's military says it could mislead thousands of people.

The Defence Headquarters has warned Nigerians to ignore a digitally manipulated video falsely portraying senior military leaders, including Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa and Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the video circulating on social media is not an official military communication and was created using digital manipulation techniques.

The military said the content is designed to spread misinformation and create confusion about the activities and leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Officials also expressed concern that fake AI-generated content is becoming more common online. They warned that such materials can damage public trust, distort facts, and potentially affect national security efforts.

"The video is false, misleading and does not represent any official communication, position, statement or engagement involving either the Chief of Defence Staff or the Chief of Army Staff," the Defence Headquarters stated.

The military urged bloggers, influencers, content creators, and social media users to verify information before sharing it. It also advised Nigerians to rely on official Defence Headquarters channels for military-related updates.

As artificial intelligence tools become more powerful and accessible, authorities fear that fake videos could become increasingly difficult for the public to identify.

For many Nigerians who rely on social media for breaking news, the warning serves as another reminder that not everything seen online is real.
Sometimes, one fake video can travel faster than the truth.
