A major maritime collision at the Bonny Inner Anchorage in Rivers State has triggered a formal safety investigation by Nigeria’s safety authorities, with early evidence pointing to operational failures that remain under review. The incident, involving a container vessel and an oil tanker, has already raised environmental and navigational concerns in one of West Africa’s busiest crude export corridors.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has opened a formal probe into a collision between MV Maersk Valparaiso, a Singapore-flagged container vessel, and MT Lady Martina, an oil tanker, which occurred on May 20, 2026, at the Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State.

The agency classified the incident as a “Very Serious Marine Casualty”, a designation reserved for events with significant risk to life, vessels, or the marine environment.

According to NSIB, a dedicated investigation “go-team” was deployed to Onne and Bonny on May 22, where investigators boarded both vessels, interviewed key crew members, and secured operational records.

Crucially, technical navigation systems were also retrieved, including:

• Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS)
