President Donald Trump has suggested that the United States may soon scale back its military operations against Iran, even as Pentagon actions and regional escalations paint a more complicated picture. In new remarks, Trump said the U.S. was “getting very close” to achieving its goals in the conflict, raising the prospect of “winding down” a war that began in late February.
The comments, posted on Truth Social, echoed earlier White House estimates that the campaign would take four to six weeks. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated that assessment, claiming the Iranian government was being “crippled day by day.” But despite Trump’s suggestion of progress, U.S. officials have simultaneously deployed additional troops to the region, with over 2,200 Marines reportedly heading toward the Middle East — a move that appears at odds with talk of de-escalation.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury announced a temporary easing of sanctions on Iranian oil already loaded onto vessels before March 20. The decision, aimed at easing a global supply crunch, could free up about 140 million barrels of oil for the world market. Energy prices have soared in recent weeks amid Iranian attacks on regional infrastructure and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping chokepoint.
On the ground, the conflict continues to widen. Iran has launched new waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Gulf energy facilities, prompting retaliatory Israeli strikes on Hezbollah positions in Beirut. Fresh explosions in Tehran and accusations of attacks on Jerusalem’s holy sites have fueled fears of broader regional instability.
Despite dismissing the idea of a ceasefire, Trump claimed he did not need one because “we have won.” Yet his remarks contrast sharply with ongoing military activity and the absence of any formal diplomatic engagement with Iran’s new leadership, which has not appeared publicly since taking power.
As tensions persist, Washington’s signals remain mixed — raising questions about whether the U.S. is preparing to step back, or simply repositioning for a longer confrontation.
