Argentina’s World Cup celebrations ended in controversy, and FIFA has now delivered its punishment.

Leandro Paredes will miss 10 matches, while teammate Nahuel Molina has been banned for seven.

FIFA has suspended Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes for 10 matches over his involvement in the clashes that followed Argentina’s 1–0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

Defender Nahuel Molina was handed a seven-match suspension after also being found responsible for his involvement in the post-match confrontation at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

FIFA’s disciplinary action followed an investigation into the scenes after Spain secured the World Cup title.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was also fined $321,000 over several disciplinary breaches, including discriminatory chants and gestures by supporters, team misconduct and the display of a political banner during the tournament.

The federation was additionally ordered to play its next two home matches with restrictions on spectators, although one match of the sanction has been suspended.

The disciplinary case also covered a banner displayed by Argentina players after their semi-final victory over England carrying a message about the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Islas Malvinas.

The sanctions bring FIFA’s disciplinary proceedings over the turbulent end to Argentina’s World Cup campaign to a conclusion.

Spain defeated Argentina 1–0 after extra time in the final.

The World Cup may be over, but the fallout from the final is far from forgotten.
