Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has opened up about the key football figures who shaped his rise to becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated strikers. During a recent Twitch livestream with comedian Carter Efe, the Galatasaray forward credited Didier Drogba, Odion Ighalo, and John Obi Mikel for playing major roles in his development both on and off the pitch.
Osimhen, who is currently in Nigeria recovering from a broken arm suffered in Galatasaray’s UEFA Champions League clash against Liverpool, began by acknowledging the role of God and his family in his success. He then highlighted the football legends who influenced his professional growth.
According to the Napoli-record goal scorer, his admiration for Didier Drogba began at a young age. Osimhen described the former Chelsea striker as his greatest inspiration and someone whose playing style, mentality, and leadership deeply motivated him. Drogba’s impact, he said, shaped his approach to football and fueled his ambition to reach the top.
Osimhen also spoke warmly about Odion Ighalo, describing him as a personal mentor and a role model. He revealed that he visited Ighalo at his home a day before the livestream, calling him “a big legend” and someone who made a significant impact on his career. Osimhen praised Ighalo’s guidance, humility, and accomplishments with the Super Eagles, noting that the former Manchester United striker has always been an inspiration for younger Nigerian players.
One of the most touching parts of Osimhen’s story involved John Obi Mikel. He recalled a moment from his first Super Eagles camp when he approached Mikel after a team meal. Mikel invited him to his room and surprised him with a generous financial gift in pounds. Osimhen described the gesture as unforgettable and a sign of Mikel’s leadership and kindness.
The striker also reflected on growing up watching Nigerian football icons like Kanu Nwankwo, Jay-Jay Okocha, and Mikel. These legends, he said, shaped his dreams long before he earned his spot on the national team.
Osimhen’s heartfelt revelations highlight the importance of mentorship, legacy, and national pride in his journey to football greatness.
