Political tensions in Osun State have intensified after an attack on a local opposition figure drew condemnation from Afrobeats star Davido, who warned against the growing use of violence in political contests. The incident has reignited concerns about election-related insecurity as preparations gather pace for the state's 2026 governorship race.
The attack, which reportedly left a political party chairman injured, comes at a time when political parties are mobilising supporters and positioning themselves for what is expected to be a fiercely contested election.
Asimiyu Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila and chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area, reportedly survived an armed attack on Wednesday night in Osogbo, Osun State.
According to accounts circulating on social media and later amplified by Davido, suspected gunmen allegedly opened fire on a blue Toyota Corolla carrying Ajibola and several associates around 9:50 p.m. near the Osogbo Community Bank axis of the MDS area.
The attack reportedly triggered panic among residents in the vicinity. Ajibola was said to have sustained injuries and was rushed to a teaching hospital for medical treatment.
Reacting publicly on Thursday, Davido condemned the incident and urged political actors to reject violence.
“Regardless of our political differences, everyone must make sure they are not contributing to insecurity in our nation,” the singer wrote.
“The attack on the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government by political hoodlums must be condemned and rejected by all.
“If APC is sure they are popular, let’s settle this with ballot papers, not guns or weapons.”
The comments have attracted widespread attention because Davido's uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is expected to seek re-election in the August 2026 Osun governorship election.
The attack arrives against the backdrop of increasing political activity in Osun State, where parties are beginning to intensify grassroots campaigns ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
Nigeria has a long history of election-related violence, particularly during highly competitive state and national contests. Incidents involving attacks on political supporters, destruction of campaign materials, and clashes between rival groups have frequently raised concerns among security agencies and election observers.
Political violence carries consequences beyond immediate casualties. It can discourage voter participation, increase public distrust in democratic institutions, and create an atmosphere of fear that undermines free political competition.
In Osun, a state known for closely fought elections, any perception of insecurity could become a significant campaign issue. The state's political landscape has often reflected broader national rivalries, making local incidents capable of attracting national attention.
The involvement of high-profile figures such as Davido further amplifies the issue, bringing political developments in Osun into mainstream national discourse and increasing scrutiny on how authorities respond.
Osun has witnessed intense political competition over the years, with elections often drawing significant attention from national political leaders and stakeholders.
The state's governorship contests have historically produced narrow margins, legal disputes, and highly charged campaigns. Political observers note that such environments can increase tensions, especially when multiple parties compete aggressively for influence.
Across Nigeria, security remains one of the most important factors influencing voter behaviour. Reports of attacks, kidnappings, and violent confrontations in various parts of the country have heightened public sensitivity to any incident involving political figures.
As campaigning gradually gathers momentum ahead of August 2026, security agencies may face increased pressure to demonstrate that political actors and ordinary citizens can participate freely without fear of intimidation or violence.
The challenge extends beyond solving a single attack. It involves reassuring voters that democratic competition will be determined at polling units rather than through coercion or force.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the attack while political stakeholders closely monitor developments.
The real test now will be whether law enforcement agencies can establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and provide a transparent account of what occurred. With the governorship election approaching, how officials respond could influence public confidence in the state's security environment and the credibility of the democratic process itself.
As political campaigns intensify in the months ahead, the incident serves as a reminder that election season often places both security institutions and political leaders under heightened scrutiny.
